This week I published a few posts on my blog. I have found that it is really hard sometimes to think of things that are relevant and that will add to my customers experience. I also learned that there is no better way to learn to master this skill than by just jumping in and doing it. Upon graduation I want to continue to be involved in social media.

This week I had the opportunity to attend social media day here on campus. There were a few recent graduates that are now out in the work force that spoke to us. The taught us what kinds of things we need to be doing so that we can get a job working with social media in the future. I feel like I have a better idea of what I will need to do in order to become a better marketer with social media.

This week I am working on writing some blog posts. I have a blog about decorating for weddings. So I made a post to it this week I also attended forum today. Logan Dunn spoke to us today at forum about social media and why we should be doing it. I felt that this helped me with my progress because he helped me to see what I need to do to become more employable. I learned that I need to be not only learning about social media, but to be actively involved in it.

This week my team and I posted a link on facebook to our video that we uploaded to YouTube. We made a lot of progress this week! We had one week to create a video for one of the IBC companies and we came together and completed the video and posted it. I think that the up coming weeks will be a real learning experience for me. I have never really used facebook to try to get traffic to anything.

For my project this week I worked with a group to make a video for one of the IBC companies on campus. We are going to try and see how many people we can get to view the video by the end of the semester. As for the progress we made we met together and decided what we wanted in the video and the theme for the video. This week I learned that making content that people will want to watch takes planning and lots of time. I also learned that it is ok to get others to help you complete the task.

This week for my personal project I am reading a book called "The New Rules of Marketing and PR" by David Scott. I am making some progress in the aspect of learning about social media, but I haven't had a chance to apply the reading to anything yet. I learned that you don't have to be involved in every social networking group in order to have an impact on your buyers. You just need to find where they are connecting at and then join a few of these groups. You don't want to spread yourself too thin or you won't have an impact on them.

This week for my project I made a video with a group of students and we made a channel on YouTube and posted our video to it. For me this was progress because I don't use YouTube that much. It was great to see that we could create something and post it. I learned that I can create a video and use it as a marketing tool. Videos are now easily passed along between users, and it can keep your campaign fresh and exciting.

This week For my personal project I learned more about using white pages and blogs to find information about what your customers are doing. I feel like this will help me be more aware of what is going on in the industry that I am working with in the future. I learned that professionals write white papers in order to solve some problem or question for that industry. They are not promoting a product.
This week for my company research project I read a few articles about facebook the first one was in titled "Facebook Stirs Up Trouble For Silicon Valley". This article talks about how facebook has recently allowed 3rd party access to link to information. There are a few senators that have wrote letters to the Federal Trade Commission requesting them to create a guideline about how facebook can use their user’s information. I think that we do have a right to our privacy and that we should at least know how our information is being used. Facebook needs to realize what their customers really want and to give them the choice as to whether their information will be given out to 3rd parties. I am really glad that someone is taking a stand on this issue before it becomes a big deal.
The second article is in titled "Mark Zuckerberg Did Not Take Your Privacy". This article talks about how we have given up our privacy a long time ago with out the help of Mark. No one forced us to give it up. The author of the article brings out the point that by simply answering security questions, copying important documents on a copy machine, giving out our real birthday, etc. This article also brought out the point that if Mark had presented this idea of Open Graph in a way that was an optional feature then it would have been accepted. We as consumers of these products have to be aware of what is going on if we want to keep our privacy. Just don’t give out information that you don’t want people to know.

This week I learned more about monitoring what is being said about a certain company or industry through Twitter. I signed up for hootsuite.com which allows you to watch different treads about keywords or people you are following. I added a few more feeds to my page so that I can watch what is going on in areas that relate to a business that my sister and I are starting.

This week for my personal project I did a company history on my two companies Google and Facebook. Because one of my goals for this semester is to get better at using social media from a marketing standpoint I set up a Twitter account and I also set up a blog for a company that my sister and I are starting up. I also linked google analytics to my blog so I can see the where the traffic is coming from.
History
Google History
Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page in the year of 1999. They made it so that people could search the Internet and get the most relevant information. Currently their CEO is Eric Schmidt. In 2001 they launched a few advertising programs (AdWords and AdSense). In 2004 Google went public. In 2006 Google bought YouTube for $1.65 Billion in that year they also entered China.
Facebook History
Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Even though this company has only been operating for 6 years they have been a huge success. In the year 2007 Microsoft bought a stake in Facebook for $240 Million and they got less than 2% of the company.
Force #1 – Positive Force: Technology- Increase in the number of Internet users
Because of the increase growth in Internet users this has a chain reaction to the search engine industry. It increases advertisers and marketers desire to market to customers online. Which also give the search engine companies the desire to gain control of as much of the tools that users use which attracts the advertisers.
I think that the key players of this industry (Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft) realize that they must stay on top of the game in order to keep their market share and to increase it. Because there are so many more users they are doing things like buying other smaller companies such as YouTube and My Space. They are looking to buy up anything that is bringing in lots of traffic. Ten years ago this industry was just barely there and just as they had to build their brand and awareness of their products. They will have to continue to increase the public’s awareness of the products that they offer and keep creating products that are considered to be valuable to the customer.
There is a huge impact on search engines because of the internet’s high speed capabilities and which gives customer real time feedback and information. Not only will search engines have to do the above things but also they will have to keep their content rich and vibrant in order to stay on top of the industry.
Force #2 – Social/Culture- Free Products
Search engines have offered free products to its customers almost right from the beginning of their existence. This has create a force that if they don’t now abide by it then it will do them in. They offer the use of the search engines for free, e-mail, access to free content, etc. They have yet to find a product that they will be able to get subscribers to it.
The way that they are getting around this problem is that they offer advertising on their sites. Advertising brings in the majority of their revenue. Because search engines started off by offering so many free products to their customers they will have to keep offer advertising on their sites or come up with creative ways to make money. This will make it so that they will have to keep being innovative and it will also make the barriers for entry higher. One thing that has been created because of this force is that they will not be able to charge a fee for the products that they have already offered for free.
